Decentraland’s LiveTeach is an open-source 3D teaching platform and is a pioneering project within Decentraland. LiveTeach, a Decentraland DAO grantee, introduces a revolutionary approach to virtual education. The platform enables educators to conduct live, immersive 3D classes all within the metaverse.
What happens when you combine an engaged community, DAO-led initiatives, and the open protocol of Decentraland? Liveteach is the result of all these elements.
Post-Covid-19 Education
The years after COVID highlighted the enormous potential of online learning. Not only were classes available to anyone, anywhere in the world, but they also broke down barriers for those who couldn’t attend in-person classes for medical or social sensitivities or other reasons. But switching to mostly virtual meetings and classes also made the limitations of the medium clear.
LiveTeach is embedded in the 3D virtual world of Decentraland. It reshapes this landscape and provides a sense of community and engagement.
The platform incorporates interactive 3D elements to enable educators to overcome traditional teaching boundaries. For example, LiveTeach expands the scope of virtual education, from manipulating molecules in chemistry class to walking through historical landmarks.
LiveTeach’s Complete Offerings
The LiveTeach headquarters will be in the learning zone of the university district. It will include a Community Venue with classrooms that instructors can apply to reserve through the DAO. However, LiveTeach as a project will offer far more than just an educational setting. A fully functional live-teaching platform that is ready to use, documentation, and all the technical resources required to duplicate the platform in different settings or add new features on top of the ones that are already there are all included in the scope of the grant deliverables:
- Virtual classrooms for concurrent classes
- Administrative dApp for managing teaching rights
- A teaching console for real-time content manipulation
- Support for varied teaching materials and interactive 3D models
- Community Venue for collaborative teaching experiences
- Development tools and extensive documentation
LiveTeach is already near completion, having showcased functional classroom templates, an integrated API documentation framework, and advanced smart contract enhancements.
More About LiveTeach
James Ashton is a seasoned e-learning expert who co-founded the Decentraland University District in 2017, the same year he founded LiveTeach. In his proposal, Ashton described all the features and materials that would be created to create the LiveTeach platform. After receiving 94% community approval in August 2023, the project was awarded $140,000 and is underway to make LiveTeach available to the public in early 2024.
