Popular domain registry GoDaddy just forged a partnership with Ethereum Name Service (ENS). The collaboration will let users connect their .eth domains on the Web3 to Domain Name System (DNS) top-level domains (TLD) for free.
DNS and ENS
Simply put, the DNS is like your Contacts list on the Internet. If you’re accessing the website or domain “blockzeit.com” on your browser, the system converts the domain name into an Internet Protocol (IP) address, which is composed of a unique string of identifying numbers corresponding to the location of the online resources you want to get into. DNS serves as a bridge in matching the domain name with the IP address so you can view the website’s contents.
ENS works similarly to DNS, but the former is confined to the decentralized Web3 realm. As its name says, it is built on the Ethereum blockchain. So, instead of remembering the series of randomly generated characters and numbers in an Ethereum address like that of an IP address, ENS converts the address into a word or name that you can easily recognize and remember.
The GoDaddy Collab
With the new partnership between GoDaddy and ENS, .eth TLD on Web3 can now be linked to traditional Uniform Resource Locator (URL) without paying for anything at all. This intersection between Web2 and Web3 lets domain owners benefit from the security and reliability provided by GoDaddy while enhancing user experience and self-sovereignty via the decentralized ENS’ blockchain platform.
According to the press release of the parties, the zero-fee model was achieved thanks to the use of new smart contracts deployed by ENS to handle the resolution process of domain names in ENS at the TLD level. This allows DNS records verification without the hassle of high gas fees, thus, giving way to a zero-cost process.
Official Statement from ENS Founder
“With this milestone, we are furthering our mission to build a more secure, decentralized, and user-friendly internet,” stated ENS founder Nick Johnson. “ENS, much like DNS, is a public good and a core part of the internet infrastructure. By pairing up ENS names and GoDaddy domains, we will streamline the way users interact with web domains, blending the familiarity of the DNS with the potential of blockchain technology.”
How to Link
Linking your GoDaddy domain to your Ethereum wallet is made easy with the newly-inked partnership with ENS.
Just follow these simple steps:
- Log in to your GoDaddy account.
- Choose the domain that you want to link and go to Domain Settings.
- In the DNS options, select Crypto Wallet.
- Turn On the DNSSEC under Step 1 to connect your ETH wallet.
- Proceed to Step 2 and enter your ETH wallet address.
- Choose Link to finish the process.
- Wait for the DNS update to take effect.
That’s it!
If you ever find the need to change your wallet address, just go to Edit Record to update it.
Now, instead of giving away your long wallet address to a sender, you can just provide them with your domain for everyone’s convenience.
