- The functionality of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) has successfully made its way to the XRP Ledger (XRPL) through the new XRPL EVM Sidechain.
- Today, two top crypto ecosystems have synergized to enable developers to deploy their Ethereum-compatible decentralized applications (dApps) while tapping into XRPL’s vast liquidity and network stability.
Bringing XRP Ledger and Ethereum Together
According to Ripple Labs, the new XRPL EVM Sidechain injects smart contract capability into the XRPL. This unlocks more potential use cases for the XRPL, expanding its capabilities and bringing flexibility in tokenization, decentralized finance (DeFi), governance systems, complex software development, and more.
At the same time, the sidechain uses XRP as its native token for fast and low-cost transactions. It also houses a consensus model similar to the mainnet while sharing some validators.
The sidechain leverages the Axelar Bridge, a bridge protocol connected to over 80 blockchains. Meanwhile, Wormhole, a cross-chain interoperability protocol, augments the sidechain’s reach in over 200 applications across 35 blockchain networks.
Ripple and Peersyst, a protocol-level blockchain developer, collaborated on the project. Its development started in 2023 and has undergone rigid testing in its succeeding testnet before today’s launch on the mainnet.
“The XRPL EVM Sidechain introduces a flexible environment for developers to deploy EVM-based applications while maintaining a connection to the XRPL’s efficiency,” explained Ripple CTO and XRPL co-inventor David Schwartz. “It extends the capabilities of the ecosystem without changing the fundamentals that make the XRPL reliable.”
“With the launch of XRPL EVM, we’re unlocking a new era for XRP—one where it can flow seamlessly across the multichain world,” added Ferran Prat, CEO and Founder of Peersyst. “This isn’t the finish line; it’s Day 1 of a much bigger journey toward interoperability, programmability, and utility at scale.”
Advantages Unlocked
The combination of the EVM and XRPL lets developers enjoy compatibility with tools like Solidity, Metamask, and Hardhat, among others. All these can be had while using XRP as gas and benefiting from a Proof of Authority (PoA) consensus mechanism to reduce transaction fees further while enhancing settlement speed.
The mechanism could deliver up to 1,000 transactions per second (TPS). In addition to the XRPL’s native liquidity, the sidechain supports access to over six million wallets.
Band Protocol, Grove, and Squid have already integrated the new XRPL EVM sidechain into their infrastructure, with more partnerships in the works with Strobe, Securd, Vertex, Blockscout, and Goldsky.
The Fourth Generation Evolution of the Crypto Ecosystem
Basically, the XRPL EVM Sidechain paves the way for the coming of the fourth generation of evolution in crypto. Instead of competing for resources and competing for supremacy, the new sidechain offers the best of both worlds in both Ethereum and XRPL.
Their merger to introduce new functionality and quality-of-life improvements for users and developers essentially abandons the “my chain is better than yours” superiority complex of Ethereum and XRP’s “Ethereum killer” narratives. It marks a new era where usability and interconnectivity have become the focal points of the discussion instead of clinging to outdated norms in the now-maturing and rapidly advancing digital assets space.
