NBA Superstar, Stephen Curry, is reported to have filed for a Metaverse trademark with the U.S Patent and Trademark Office. The application constitutes digital currencies, assets, and products such as online games, digital tokens, personal appearances, and more.
Iconic four-time NBA champion, Stephen Curry, has recently filed for a “Curryverse” trademark application just this October 26, 2022. The famous basketball star filed with the United States Patent and Trademark to secure digital assets and services for the metaverse.
Curry seeks to introduce a larger slice of his Basketball brand that’s set to attract the NBA’s millions of fans to the Web3 metaverse. As of this writing, the patent status is still “pending” according to government sources.
The patent will grant exclusive rights for “entertainment services, namely, personal and virtual and metaversal appearances.” Moreover, it includes “online gaming services” in which players are able to trade NFTs (Non-fungible tokens) in digital marketplaces and virtual clothing and goods.
Steph Curry and the Metaverse
The “Curryverse” filing has certainly not been Curry’s first foray into Web3. Partnered with Under Armour, the collaboration released an NFT collection in celebration of the NBA star’s 3-point shooting record. Stephen also purchased a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT for 55 Ethereum that was worth around $206,000 and he also owns a plethora of NFT collections as seen on his OpenSea wallet.
At one point, Stephen Curry changed his Twitter profile picture to display a BAYC ape to show solidarity within the NFT online community. But more importantly, he’s been the ambassador for the FTX crypto exchange since 2021. His recent move towards a “Curryverse” has been a long line of progressive advancements toward the metaverse.
Final thoughts
Aside from Curry, this year has shown the highest number of trademark applications than any other year, surpassing 2021’s 3,516 patent filings. Luxury brands such as Hermes and major companies such as Gatorade and Mcdonalds have all made substantial metaverse moves, suggesting bullish sentiments towards the metaverse likely through the release of digital currencies and products in the blockchain.
On top of experiencing negative price activity during this bear market, this has not stopped certain personalities like Stephen Curry from placing their bets on the future of Web3.
