The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has definitely gone 180 from its antagonistic stance toward cryptocurrencies to a more favorable tone. Recently, the commission announced that its Crypto Task Force will facilitate four roundtable discussions centering on digital assets regulation. During the terms of former Chairmen Jay Clayton and Gary Gensler, this appeared to be a far possibility.
Incoming SEC Crypto Task Force Roundtables
The roundtable meeting features a discussion-based format. Each participant will have an equal footing in sharing their thoughts during the talks. The Crypto Task Force aims to identify the regulatory challenges hounding the digital assets space along the way.
Together with the participants, the SEC wants to brainstorm possible solutions to the underlying issues. The subjects of the events mainly revolve around crypto trading, digital asset custody, tokenization, and DeFi (decentralized finance.)
According to the SEC, it will hold the roundtable meetings at its headquarters in Washington, D.C. The regulator will also stream the event live on its official website. The commission confirmed the following dates in the next couple of months for different topics:
- April 11: Between a Block and a Hard Place: Tailoring Regulation for Crypto Trading
- April 25: Know Your Custodian: Key Considerations for Crypto Custody
- May 12: Tokenization—Moving Assets Onchain: Where TradFi and DeFi Meet
- June 6: DeFi and the American Spirit
“The Crypto Task Force roundtables are an opportunity for us to hear a lively discussion among experts about what the regulatory issues are and what the Commission can do to solve them,” said Commissioner Hester Peirce, head of the Crypto Task Force and whom the crypto community endearingly refers to as “Crypto mom.”
In addition, the SEC invited interested panelists for the roundtables to email the Crypto Task Force via crypto@sec.gov.
SEC Drops Probe Into Immutable
Fresh from its reciprocal dropping of an appeal with Ripple, the SEC has recently added Immutable to its string of case and probe dismissals. The regulator notably launched an investigation into the Web3 gaming platform last year for its alleged US securities law violations stemming from its sale of IMX tokens.
The SEC has formally concluded the probe without any enforcement action. Immutable believes the end of its ordeal with the regulator marks another “win for all builders, creators, and gamers fighting for true digital ownership in gaming.”
The Web3 gaming platform expressed its support for the SEC’s ongoing efforts to arrive at a clear regulatory framework for the digital assets industry.
