In a new announcement, a new blockchain web browser is introducing a beta search engine that some are questioning if this could challenge the reigns of Google. Now, a web browser rivals Google.
Brave is an open source software web browser founded in 2019 whose primary focus is on internet privacy. It protects users from website tracking and blocks ads. There is an optional ad feature on the browser that compensates users in BAT tokens, the company’s native ERC20 token, for watching ads. Recently, the company released a public letter on their website saying:
“Starting today, online users have a new independent option for search which gives them unmatched privacy. Whether they are already Brave browser users, looking to expand their online privacy protection with the all-in-one, integrated Brave Search in the Brave browser, or users of other browsers looking for the best-in-breed privacy-preserving search engine, they can all use the newly released Brave Search beta that puts users first, and fully in control of their online experience.”
Brave a company based on privacy
One of the main priorities of the company is providing internet users with an alternative to big tech companies. Such as Google and their data/surveillance driven priorities. The company indicates that they have strong integrity and enthusiasm for being independent of Big Tech. They say:
“In order to present a true independent alternative to big tech, Brave decided to build its own index rather than rent it from Google or Microsoft, as other smaller search engines are currently doing.”
The team’s resolve to keep users data private is significant. However, the Brave team is 100% transparent about the ecosystem they’re building. They reveal in their letter that with some features like images they will extend to Bing to bring users results. This will not compromise user privacy, but it does reduce what they call the “independence metric”.
However, the team did mention plans to expand their index. This being the case, they hope to increase their independance metric as time goes on.
Final thoughts
The Brave beta search engine is now released internationally via IOS, Android, and desktop. The fact that Brave is building is a direct challenge to Google. Brave will offer users incredible advantages that Google cannot if they keep striving to build an entirely new ecosystem based on privacy.
