Mt. Gox Dumps Hit As BTC Dips Under $62,000 Amid Massive Market Wipeout

  • Bitcoin fell below $62,000 as the crypto market lost more than $500 billion in value within 25 days.
  • Transfers from Mt. Gox wallets added pressure to an already fragile market amid ongoing ETF outflows.
  • Michael Saylor’s small Bitcoin sale was dismissed by analysts as a tax-related move rather than a shift in Strategy’s long-term accumulation plan.

Bitcoin took a brutal hit this week, sliding below $62,000 for the first time since early February, while the entire crypto market shed more than half a trillion dollars in just 25 days. Traders got wrecked, but some big names stepped up with takes that cut through the noise.

$500B+ Wiped from Crypto Market Cap as Mt. Gox Moves Bitcoin

Over half a trillion dollars have disappeared from the crypto market cap in 25 days. Bitcoin alone lost over $400 billion in value as it touched $61,000. The sell-off accelerated fast, with leverage clearing out weak hands and sentiment turning sour.

The liquidation also occurred as Mt. Gox-linked wallets deposited 116.3 BTC, worth roughly $8.2 million, to Bitstamp. This move came right as Bitcoin broke below $62,000. Mt. Gox still holds a big stack of around 34,500 BTC, and creditors continue to get repaid years after the 2014 hack.

The transfer itself is small compared to daily volume, but headlines like this piled on the pressure at exactly the wrong time.

The BTC price drop broke key support levels, triggered liquidations, and saw ETF outflows pile up for 11 straight days. Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded record redemptions, and analysts note these flows explain about 45% of weekly price moves.

The chart showed heavy downside momentum, with price slicing through moving averages and support zones that held earlier in the year. Bitcoin officially erased half its all-time high price at $62,000 as bids dried up below $65,000.

Citi and Adam Back Downplay MicroStrategy Sale

Michael Saylor’s Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) sold 32 BTC for the first time in years. The company moved the coins as part of a disclosed tax-optimization plan to cover dividends. Citi analysts called it noise that does not change the bigger Bitcoin treasury strategy. They pointed instead to those persistent ETF outflows as the real driver.

Adam Back also weighed in on X. He said Saylor sold to “show the market how to value Bitcoin.” The comment framed the small sale as a deliberate signal rather than panic.

Strategy still holds hundreds of thousands of BTC at an average cost well below current levels, so the move looks tactical.

The market has seen this volatility before. Big wipes happen when leverage builds up and sentiment flips. Mt. Gox transfers added headline risk, ETF outflows drained demand, and the Saylor sale gave bears fuel. Yet on-chain data and long-term holders stayed mostly steady.
