- IBM has plugged into SWIFT’s blockchain-powered shared ledger to unlock key capabilities for governments, financial institutions, and organizations.
On Thursday, IBM, a global technology and consulting company, announced the beta launch of its proprietary Digital Asset Haven to redefine how its clients can interact with permissioned chains beyond its own ledger.
IBM Digital Asset Haven and SWIFT Ledger
The IBM Digital Asset Haven is an enterprise-grade solution with a unified operating platform. IBM built the infrastructure with Dfns, a leading wallet-as-a-service (WaaS) provider. It helps regulated entities secure, manage, and settle digital assets across public and private blockchains.
Meanwhile, SWIFT’s ledger, unveiled at Sibos 2025 in Frankfurt, extends SWIFT’s secure global messaging network into a digital environment. Its use of blockchain upgrades the system to always-on transactions with a near-instant settlement mechanism. The platform is a product of its collaboration with 40 financial institutions worldwide.
What Their Integration Unlocks
According to IBM, integrating SWIFT’s distributed ledger technology (DLT) will connect its network to around 12,500 financial institutions across more than 200 markets. The Digital Asset Haven’s ISO 20022 Messaging Adapter will allow users to instruct tokenized deposit transactions through the ledger using standard ISO 20022 messages.
The model lets them build on existing payment message formats and operational processes instead of blockchain-specific workflows. As a result, it simplifies the integration process and lowers the technical barrier to entry for regulated participants.
Additionally, the platform unlocks bank-issued tokenized deposits and digital asset transfers 24/7. These are protected by established SWIFT standards and banks’ strict compliance processes.
The Digital Asset Haven’s programmable, policy-based governance and diverse set of developer-friendly interfaces enable users to integrate it seamlessly into their banking systems. Moreover, they can configure its operational workflows to synchronize them with their internal controls, treasuries, and processes.
Tom McPherson, General Manager, IBM Z and LinuxONE, highlighted that the financial services sector is rapidly transitioning into an era where tokenization and traditional assets intersect and run side by side. He emphasized that expanding the Digital Asset Haven into the SWIFT ecosystem would help clients have a greater degree of participation in that phase without giving up control of their tested-and-proven strategies and vital operations.
“As institutions modernize payments and prepare for a future of always-on transactions, they need infrastructure that combines innovation with the security, resiliency, and regulatory compliance requirements of regulated banking,” said McPherson. “By connecting to SWIFT’s shared ledger and extending IBM Digital Asset Haven to on-premises environments, IBM is helping clients participate in emerging digital asset networks while prioritizing control of their most critical financial operations.”
