  • The ECB has greenlit Pontes, an interoperability bridge that enables settlement of wholesale transactions in tokenized assets using digital euro central bank money.
  • Financial institutions such as Deutsche Bank, Deka Bank, and DZ Bank, as well as Germany’s central bank, have joined the initiative as market participants.

The European Central Bank (ECB) has finally deployed the wholesale version of the digital euro on the market. It harmonizes with Pontes, an interoperability layer that settles tokenized asset transactions in the central bank digital currency (CBDC).

The Digital Euro Deployment on Wholesale Financial Markets

On Monday morning (UTC), the ECB launched the digital euro about six years after its conceptual framework. However, it is currently used mainly for transaction settlements across wholesale financial markets and institutional trading environments.

Meanwhile, the ECB plans to start testing the digital euro’s retail version in mid-2027. It comes amid strong public opposition, driven by concerns that it would give the government more means for financial surveillance and control.

The digital euro is basically an electronic equivalent of cash, issued by the ECB. The central bank clarified that it complements banknotes and coins, giving people more options for settling transactions, rather than presenting itself as a replacement for the EU’s physical fiat currency.

Pontes Launches for Settlements Using Tokenized Assets

The milestone is part of Pontes, which bridges private blockchain trading venues and the Eurosystem’s TARGET Services. ECB President Christine Lagarde summarized Pontes simply as a platform that makes digital euro available for banks.

Lagarde explained that the platform lets banks and other financial institutions transact with one another using tokenized assets. This could significantly cut the friction associated with traditional systems, which are typically rife with fragmented, legacy infrastructure, high counterparty risk, and delayed settlement cycles.

The initiative aligns with Appia, the ECB’s longer-term and broader strategic initiative to fully integrate private DLT networks with central bank money. It seeks to establish a unified tokenized financial ecosystem across the EU.

The ECB’s testing for Pontes began in 2024, with its full implementation expected by 2028.

Initial Market Participants in Pontes

The central bank said major market participants have already shown “significant interest” in the platform. These include ABANCA, BayernLB, Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations (CDC), Cecabank, Deutsche Bank, Deka Bank, DZ Bank, European Investment Bank, Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), Memo Bank, NRW.BANK, Santander, and Société Générale.

Additionally, Germany’s central bank, the Deutsche Bundesbank, has joined Pontes in a market participant role. On the other hand, the DLT participants include Axiology, Cashlink, Clearstream and SWIAT.

The ECB claimed that the group is ready to plug into Pontes immediately. More participants have also committed to be part of the system in the coming months.

For the EU central bank, the positive engagement of major financial institutions in Pontes demonstrates the innovation’s potential to place Europe at the forefront of finance’s next frontier as it evolves with the digital era and market demand.
