- Deutsche Bank prepares to launch its digital asset custody solution for institutional and corporate clients in Europe.
- The platform initially supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDC, EURC, and EURAU.
Deutsche Bank, Germany’s leading bank, announced that it’s preparing to launch a suite of digital asset custody solutions this year. The service focuses on institutional and corporate clients in Europe, offering secure storage for their tokens within regulated rails.
In addition to secure storage, the new solution will let clients safely transfer their digital assets to third parties. Under the setup, Deutsche Bank will manage clients’ wallets and private keys, effectively shifting the risks of key management, transaction verification, and operational security to the institution.
The platform initially supports selected digital assets, including Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), Circle’s USDC and EURC, and AllUnity’s EURAU. The bank plans to expand its support to more crypto assets and tokenized real-world assets as its digital asset solutions scale with market conditions.
An Answer to Surging Demand for Regulated Institutional-Grade Custody Solutions
The move reflects a broader trend among major financial institutions, which are stepping up their digital asset infrastructure to meet rising demand from corporate treasuries, asset managers, hedge funds, sovereign entities, and institutional investors seeking secure entry points into Web3.
The first to benefit from the service are the multinational company’s Corporate Bank and Investment Bank clients. However, their onboarding is subject to the bank’s criteria, due diligence requirements, and risk-mitigating protocols.
Layers of Safeguards and Controls
Deutsche Bank highlighted that it designed the custody solution around multiple layers of security and operational control, alongside strict governance. It uses secure key generation and hardware-based protection, strict asset segregation, multi-person approval processes, redundant setup, separation of warm and cold storage, and controlled backups and recoveries.
The framework notably leverages the institutional-grade custody and tokenization technology of Deutsche Bank’s long-time partner Taurus, a Swiss fintech company.
Digital Assets: Complement to TradFi
Along the way, Deutsche Bank clarified that digital assets are an “important complement” to traditional finance (TradFi), not a replacement. They enhance existing market infrastructures with an extra layer of trust, security, and efficiency. Meanwhile, the bank packages them in a regulated offering.
Gerald Podobnik, Co-Head Corporate Bank at Deutsche Bank, said the bank aims to scale the service as client demand, compliance requirements, and its risk appetite evolve.
The Caveat
Deutsche Bank reminds customers, though, that despite its high-earning potential, digital asset ownership also carries material risks. These include the inherent price volatility in cryptocurrencies, cybersecurity incidents, fraud, and market participant failures.
Furthermore, the bank emphasized that crypto assets do not have deposit-guarantee schemes similar to eligible bank deposits.
