The three-part Coinbase series will be shown at NFT.NYC will feature Bored Ape characters submitted by community members and will be tied to the Coinbase NFT marketplace.
Coinbase entertainment department has inked a deal with Yuga Labs, the creators of the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) that will see BAYC expand into the world of entertainment. According to the announcement, the partnership will see them produce a three-part short film trilogy that will feature Bored Apes as animated characters.
Inspired by the Bored Ape Yacht Club community
The short dubbed “The Degen Trilogy” and updates on its development will be released on DegenTrilogy.com. Coinbase’s Entertainment & Culture Marketing Director, William Swann, said in a release:
“We’ve been inspired by the Bored Ape Yacht Club community and are excited to invite them to co-create this film with us.”
According to the film’s website, the first film in the series will debut at NFT.NYC in June, with two other entries to follow over the next year. Ape owners who’ll be lucky enough to get selected in the casting process will get a licensing fee of $10,000 in Apecoin or Bitcoin. The license will be recorded on-chain and continue with the ape into the secondary market.
Characters in the series will be based on specific Bored Ape NFTs. Token holders will submit their own character descriptions, which will be judged and selected by a Hollywood casting director. Submissions will be open until April 13 at 11 am PST.
Coinbase is casting BAYC for film series
The Bored Ape Yacht Club said on Twitter that Mutant Ape Yacht Club would similarly be able to submit their apes for part two of the series. However, submissions will not be open to the Bored Ape Kennel Club.
According to the prologue, the film is set in the 2020s in a “chaotic” Midtown Manhattan, when “for the first time, digital goods and services have outpaced all other indicators as a measure of value in the market.” it continues to say:
“As the old system crumbles, whole new realms spring forth from the ashes. […]Enter the Degens. A new class of social adept, versed in the constantly re-invented tools of an ever-accelerating economy.”
The Bored Ape Yacht Club is one of the most popular NFT projects. Its Ethereum-based collections have generated more than $3.2 billion in combined secondary market trading volume. The cheapest-available Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT currently listed on a marketplace is 109 ETH, or about $329,000. Coinbase is now the third-largest crypto exchange by trading volume, with over $3 billion traded in the past 24 hours.
