- CME Group Chair and CEO Terrence Duffy confirmed that they are developing their “own coin” during the company’s recent Q4 Earnings Call.
- Meanwhile, he revealed that they will expand their crypto support to include Cardano, Chainlink, and Stellar.
CME Group Inc’s fourth-quarter earnings call on Wednesday revealed several new products and services that traders and investors can look forward to this year. One of them is its platform’s expansion to support more crypto offerings, including the launch of its “own coin.”
CME Confirms Development of ‘Own Coin’
Terrence Duffy, Chairman and CEO of CME, spilled the beans about the company’s upcoming token. The transcript of the event published on Seeking Alpha indicated that the institution’s top executive confirmed their exploration of different initiatives using their “own coin,” which they could potentially integrate into a decentralized network. His comments came in response to Michael Cyprys, Managing Director of Morgan Stanley, when asked about the role and benefits of tokenized collateral, particularly on the subject of stablecoins, tokenized deposits, and tokenized money funds.
Duffy didn’t elaborate on the details of their “own coin,” as the conversation steered away from the topic immediately, and he preferred keeping his answers short. Nonetheless, he claimed that its goal is to create efficiencies for clients without introducing additional risk to the system.
In relation to tokenized cash, Duffy also disclosed that they are working on an initiative with Google, which they expect to launch this year. Additionally, he stated that they tapped “another depository bank” to facilitate their tokenized transactions.
It was unclear whether CME’s “own coin” would operate as a stablecoin settlement or another type of asset.
Expansion of Support to More Cryptocurrencies
To date, CME only offers crypto futures and options based on Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), XRP, and Solana (SOL). Duffy highlighted that they will expand their product portfolio to include Cardano (ADA), Chainlink (LINK), and Stellar (XLM) futures this coming February 9.
What’s more, the group’s chair and CEO said they will open their entire crypto suite to 24/7 trading by next quarter, providing customers with continuous and more flexible market access.
Fifth Consecutive Record Volume
Duffy pointed out that 2025 marked CME’s “fifth consecutive year of record volume.” Its daily contracts rose by 6% to 28.1 million contracts across the year. He mainly attributed the company’s gains to its interest rate, energy, metals, agricultural, and crypto complexes.
Furthermore, CME’s international business experienced a record year, with an average of 8.4 million contracts per day. The figures were 8% higher than the previous record established in 2024.
The head of the group noted that global participants continue to choose their platform for its deep and liquid markets, which significantly help manage risks.
