CHF Stablecoin Advances To Test Phase With 9 Institutions On Board

  • The CHF stablecoin initiative has grown to nine members, adding SIX and TWINT to the consortium behind it.
  • The project is also advancing from sandbox to test phase, which will run until year-end.

Stablecoins are undoubtedly the next frontier of finance. They unlock unprecedented cost efficiency and speed not found in traditional settlement systems, whether in fiat or card-based transactions. That’s not even mentioning the transparency, programmability, and security they offer.

To date, US dollar stablecoins dominate the space, with Tether’s USDT holding a lion’s share at 58% of the roughly $314.76 billion market. This dominance, however, creates a major disconnect between the global adoption of stablecoin technology and local-currency utility as more payments go digital.

While cross-border transactions and crypto settlement rely heavily on USD-denominated tokens, domestic financial ecosystems, especially in Europe, require native-currency solutions to prevent currency mismatches, curb widespread currency substitution, preserve monetary sovereignty, maintain economic stability, and seamlessly interface with local banking rails.

Swiss Franc Stablecoin Initiative Transitions to Test Phase

In Switzerland, a consortium consisting of UBS, PostFinance, Sygnum, Raiffeisen, Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB), and Banque Cantonale Vaudoise (BCV) launched a stablecoin initiative catering to the Swiss franc early this year. Swiss Stablecoin AG facilitated the evaluation of the digital asset’s issuance and use within a closed blockchain infrastructure, also referred to as a sandbox, around mid-2026.

Fast-forward to September, the cooperation has grown with the entry of two major Swiss financial organizations. The group recently welcomed SIX, the infrastructure provider of Switzerland’s financial hub, and TWINT, a leading mobile payment and digital wallet app in the country.

With SIX and TWINT on board, the group is leveraging its wider reach to accelerate the CHF stablecoin project. It’s now transitioning from a sandbox to a test phase.

Unlike the regular sandbox, which simulated the CHF stablecoin’s features within a secure, closed digital workspace, the test phase will involve a more rigorous evaluation of the token’s potential applications in a real-world, live setting, albeit with limited transaction flows. The safeguards are necessary to ensure the tests’ controlled execution and isolate potential operational risks.

Key Objectives of the CHF Stablecoin’s Test Phase

According to UBS, they designed the test phase with an open-source outcome. Participants expect to run the tests through the end of 2026.

The test’s primary objectives are the following:

  • Gain insights into where the CHF stablecoin could create added value
  • Discover the inherent challenges in the blockchain-powered, digital version of the Swiss franc
  • Determine which technical, operational, and regulatory requirements are necessary for potential future development

The consortium stated that it will publish an overview of its findings “upon completion of the initiative.”
