Brian Armstrong Says Crypto And AI Complement Each Other

  • Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong argued that AI and crypto do not compete with each other, much like electricity and the internet.
  • He highlighted that an AI-driven economy will not work without a financial layer, which crypto can only provide.

Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, has recently shared his thoughts about the widening public divide in cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence (AI) ventures. It came in response to several analysts urging people to ditch crypto in favor of AI investments.

Brian Armstrong Highlights How AI and Crypto Work Together

According to Armstrong, the zero-sum mentality is the wrong approach toward the two technologies, which actually complement each other. For him, crypto is a general-purpose technology and an infrastructure.

The Coinbase CEO likened crypto to electricity or the internet, which underpin various technologies and do not compete with each other. Thus, treating AI and crypto as mutually exclusive themes stems from a flawed “zero-sum, scarcity thinking” mindset.

Additionally, Armstrong stated that AI being a megatrend does not take anything away from crypto. Instead, AI only makes crypto more important, especially now that the financial industry is starting to lean toward a machine-to-machine economy driven by AI agents.

Armstrong projects that AI agents will eventually surpass human transactions. However, they will still need to work with a financial infrastructure.

The exec reminded people that AI agents still need banks for on- and off-ramps, but they can’t open bank accounts themselves. Moreover, they can’t wait days for a wire, and they reside in one country. AI agents need real-time programmable money to operate, which is crypto’s role.

Armstrong explained that AI agents need to hold funds and pay for things autonomously. He claimed that Coinbase has already pioneered such a model with the x402 protocol, Base, and USDC. The same protocol is now powering agentic payments.

The architecture is capable of raising or borrowing money for new projects AI agents are undertaking. Furthermore, they could eliminate manual tasks involving tax planning, portfolio rebalancing, and bill payments.

Armstrong emphasized that Coinbase is starting to build toward the world of Agentic Finance (AiFi).

Community Response

Many people reacted positively to Armstrong’s optimistic outlook on both AI and crypto. However, some raised the alarm on the ongoing dilution of the Bitcoin (BTC) ecosystem as stablecoins take center stage in the agentic AI economy. Meanwhile, there’s a rising number of crypto mining firms that are gradually shifting into AI data center models.

Over the past years, several high-profile Bitcoin mining firms, such as Hut8 and TeraWulf, have begun reallocating massive resources from proof-of-work (PoW) operations to supporting AI data centers and high-performance computing (HPC) demands. The Bitcoin community fears that the trend could potentially trigger an existential crisis for BTC and other PoW altcoins.

Others noted that people can’t entirely trust AI agents for their wallets, as they cannot even maintain a cohesive file path.
