Technical Analyst Warns Gold Price Could Be Heading To A Depression Phase

  • A technical analyst says gold’s price trajectory suggests investor frustration, based on the Psychology of a Market Cycle.
  • Meanwhile, a confluence of technical and fundamental factors could drive the precious metal’s next bullish rally.

Gold price continues to underperform Bitcoin (BTC) and correlated altcoins. A technical analyst suggests that investors in the precious metal are showing signs of frustration based on the classic Psychology of a Market Cycle.

The Psychology of a Market Cycle refers to the periodic shifts in investor sentiment during the market’s boom-and-bust cycles. It maps out the possible price trajectory of a tradable asset through stages of market expansion, peak, decline, and recovery.

According to the Bitcoin Foundation, various factors drive markets, including interest rates, liquidity, earnings, regulations, and geoeconomic events. However, investors’ emotions often determine how far prices move in either direction.

Investors ‘Feeling Angry’ at the Price of Gold

Ali Martinez, a technical analyst on X, explained that gold remains bound to the same cycle, ranging from optimism and euphoria to fear, capitulation, anger, and depression. He then shared his evaluation of gold’s current state in line with that pattern.

The technical analyst claimed investors may be “feeling angry” after gold’s persistent sell pressure from its spot price range of $4,120 per troy ounce. This follows its peak near $4,700 in August, which marked the cycle’s “euphoria” phase; a rebound to $4,500, which drove “Complacency” among holders; and a subsequent decline that gripped investors with anxiety, denial, and panic.

If the trend resumes, Martinez warned that gold could still drop to $4,000. It’s slightly below the “Disbelief” zone of the Psychology of a Market Cycle at roughly $4,043.

GOLD INVESTORS FEELING ANGRY

Gold’s recent price action looks very similar to the classic Psychology of a Market Cycle.

The Silver Lining

Despite Martinez’s bearish near-term analogy on gold, he is optimistic about a potential relief rally between $4,100 and $4,200 before another downturn that would finish its “Depression” phase. He noted that completing the cycle would eventually reset sentiment and lay the foundation for the next cycle, paving the way for gold’s new price discovery.

Meanwhile, the analyst highlighted that the first rebound of the new cycle may be misinterpreted as a “sucker rally.” But it may also signal a new uptrend.

Amid the near-term bearish outlook, Peter Schiff, Chair of Schiffgold and a long-standing crypto critic, sees the ongoing capitulation in gold as a significant disconnect from what is happening on the macro. He believes a series of converging crises will set up the launchpad for the precious metal’s next major rally.

Schiff emphasized that the unsustainability of the USA’s debt and interest rates could be key catalysts for the event.
